Not all mini splits are created equal, especially when it comes to efficiency. New mini split air conditioners use far less energy than older units, particularly if you choose an ENERGY STAR rated system. Cooling efficiency is measured by SEER2, which stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio, and heating efficiency is measured by HSPF2, or Heating Seasonal Performance Factor.
In layman's terms, these ratings tell you how much heating or cooling you get for the amount of electricity used. The higher the number, the less power your mini split air conditioner and heating system needs to keep your home comfortable, and the more money you save on your utility bills. If your old unit ran constantly and still didn't keep up, upgrading to a high-efficiency model will make a big difference in both comfort and cost.
